Marketing Monday: My favorite SEO Plugin

January 19, 2015 by Moran Media

SEO? That’s Search Engine Optimization, but everyone calls it SEO, congratulations, you now know a buzz word.

I’m always telling people that WordPress is a great CMS (Content Management System) and I install it on many of my customer’s sites. WordPress is basic and customizable, without the customization, you might get lost. Plugins are what we use to cusomize the website, they can make the site do a lot of really flashy things, but many of the plugins do stuff behind the scenes that you don’t see, but need to happen.

Today I’m going to tell you about my favorite SEO plugin, WordPress SEO by Yoast. It’s easy and simple, there is a free version, and a paid version, depending on what you need. It works amazingly, and they are always adding new functionality to it. Thanks to this plugin I get to tell google and other search engines how I want them to describe me.  In the first image, you can see how there is a preview of my post as it would appear in google.  It shows the title, the URL, and a small description.

There are tabs that let me check how well the SEO is in my page, with advice, some special functions, and how to modify how my links will look in social media.Screen shot 2014-12-10 at 1.30.17 AM

In the next image you can see how I can customize the descriptions for each social media platform, making it relevant to the reader. I can even give them separate titles, and images so it is customized for the reader.

There are a lot of other things this does, you can customize the SEO on every page on your website, set defaults but it also will integrate your webmaster tools. You can set it to talk to your facebook page and google plus page,  not to mention it makes creating twitter cards a breeze. It can work with Permalinks, your RSS, there are just too many options. Plus you can buy add on extensions.

If I lost you with some of these terms, don’t worry, the most important part you need to know I explained with pictures. If you want to follow a more in depth tutorial check out this one, and take it step by step. SEO is how you get google and other search engines to notice you more, and it helps people find your site when they are looking for the right content.

What do you use for SEO? Have you forgotten about SEO? Need help adding this to your site? Let me know.

Testimonials

avatarRebecca has been working with AHA for the past 5-6 years helping our ever-growing not-for-profit look as professional in our print publications as we are in our conferences and other events. She is wonderful to work with as she takes ideas and makes them clear, good looking, crisp and easily accessible to all. Her turn-around time is remarkable.  We often have many things going at one time but Rebecca helps us keep them straight, consistent and professional looking. She also is very aware of our budget and helps to keep our fees down. I recommend her wholeheartedly.

We hired Rebecca with Moran Media after we could no longer do our website on our own through FrontPage. We found Rebecca through a Facebook post. She was able to see our vision and create a website that provides all our needs and more. She also added functions that we haven’t done in the past like blogging. A great addition to our presence on the web. Rebecca also created awesome logos for our company, something we didn’t have before!

Rebecca is thorough, professional, and does quality work. She thinks outside the box and really listened to what we needed and went beyond our expectations! She even gave us advice on how to use our new site to grow our presence on the web. We highly recommend Rebecca and Moran Media for any of the creative needs you or your company may have.

avatarI'm a writer and a voice actor, so my blog isn't just a journal, it's also part of my platform. Having banner art that fits both ME and my SITE is incredibly important. I gave Rebecca a concept and a really bad picture of me, and she gave me a banner design that makes me smile whenever I see it, and has drawn favorable responses from new and longtime readers and Facebook followers.

For the first time since I started my blog in 2002, I don't have the urge to change the design or the art every quarter.

It's always lovely to be able to support friends, especially when those friends are other women. It's even lovelier when the person in question is a talented, competent professional who is easy to work with.

I just asked her for a quote to do a whole site for me later this summer...can't wait to see what she comes up with.
